Xylotrechus clarinus, a species occuring in the Kuril Islands (Kunashir) and Japan, has ben described from Japan by Henry Walter Bates in 1884 [▽]. X. clarinus, the sister species of Xylotrechus (Xylotrechus) ibex (Gebler, 1825), is ecologically connected with Betulaceae, predominatly with birches (Betula spp.). Female lay eggs to trunks of dying or freshly fallen birch trees. Larvae feed subcortically, create meandering shallow galleries filled with frass containing bark. Larvae of the last instar create pupal cells in bark at end of the gallery. Life cycle 2 years, adults are active from June to September and can be found on the host trees [❖].
