Tetrops peterkai, a new Central-Eauropean species known from Czechia, Slovakia, Austria and Germany, has been described according series of many specimens from Central Europe (holotype from Moravia) by Lukáš Skořepa in 2020 [▽]. Differential diagnosis of this interesting in Frangula alnus developing species, which specimens have been confused with T. praeustus praeustus probably for decades until now, is also included in the description paper. Maxim A. Lazarev demoted this clearly and well distinguished taxon to the level of a subspecies without any logical and scientifically based explanation in 2024 [✳], therefore the authors of the portal consider the species still valid.
Tetrops praeustus species cluster comprises several very similar species and subspecies (T. praeustus praeustus (Linnaeus, 1758); T. gilvipes (Faldermann, 1837); T. praeustus praetermitus Sláma, 2020 [❖]; T. praeustus peterkai Skořepa, 2020) that are thanks to similar bionomy and overal look often confused or misidentified. Valuable information on the taxonomy of Central European Tetrops praeusta-cluster can be found in the works of Polish (Jacek Kurzawa, Marek Miłkowski, and Jerzy M. Gutowski, 2020) and German colleagues (Ralf W. Hass and Andreas Pütz, 2022)[✮][✳].
According to the authors of the website, the entire cluster of these taxa, in which the diversity of habits of adults is also influenced geographically, needs a comprehensive revision using not only classical morphology in larvae and adults but also DNA analysis.
Body length: ♂♂ 3.1 - 5.0 mm / ♀♀ 2.9 - 5.5 mm Life cycle: 1 - 2 years Adults in: April - July Host plant: development reported only from alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus) Distribution: Czechia, Slovakia, Austria, Germany
The depicted mounted specimens were beaten from Frangula alnus branches in Boršov u Litětin Natural Monument environs (Dolní Roveň - Litětiny, Pardubice district, Pardubice region, Eastern Bohemia, Czechia) on May 17, 2003 (♂) and May 26, 2001, respectively (♀).Collected by David Navrátil
