Prionus insularis, a species occuring in North-East Asia (Russian Far East, North China, Japan, North Korea), has been described from Japan by Victor Motschulsky in 1857 [▽]. The species, inhabiting broad-leaved forests, is ecologically associated with decaying wood of deciduous trees. The typical habitats are valleys, moderately dense forests in river (creek) catchment areas, and terraces with developed grass cover. Adults are active at dusk from July to September. Female lays eggs in soil to on roots of thick-trunked decaying trees and stumps. Larval development, at least 3 years long, takes place under bark and later in wood of decaying roots. Third-instar larvae migrate to root surface, make pupal cell in soil alongside root with large fibrous frass [✧].

The depicted beetles were collected in Tretyakovo (Третьяково) cottage settlement environs (N43°59′09″ E145°39′15″; Valentina creek valley, Kunashir/Кунаши́р island, Kuril Islands, Yuzhno-Kurilsky district, Sakhalin region, Russia) on: ♂ (32 mm) - August 13-14, 2011 and ♀ (36 mm) - August 17, 2008.Collected by Kirill V.
