Phytoecia (Neomusaria) waltli, a relatively rare species occuring in Near East and South Turkey, has been originally described from "Turkey" as Saperda modesta by Joseph Waltl in 1838 [✳]. For a long time, this taxon was listed in the literature as Phytoecia modesta, however, due to the preoccupation of the name modesta, the currently valid species name is waltli, first used by Gianfranco Sama in 1991 [❖]. Larval development in basal stem parts and roots of Salvia species. Adults, active from April to June, can be found on host plants [✮].

Body length: 9 - 13 mm
Life cycle:1 year
Adults in:April - June
Host plant:sages (Salvia spp.)
Distribution:Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey

The beetle in the picture was collected on Salvia sp. in Avgadi environs (800-1100 m a.s.l., 35 km N of Erdemli, Mersin province, South Turkey) on June 16-20, 1996.
