Phytoecia (Phytoecia) pubescens, a species occuring in Southeastern Europe, Turkey, Near East, Caucasus, Transcaucasia, and Iran, has been described as Phytœcia manicata var. pubescens by Maurice Pic in 1895 [❖]. The same beetle was described as Phytoecia glaphyra by Karl Daniel in 1906 [✧]. Although Maurice Pic subsequently promoted his variety to a species, specimens of this taxon appeared in the literature often under Daniel's name glaphyra or were often misdetermined as Ph. manicata. It was not until 1993 that Mikhail Danilevsky solved the problem by restituting the taxon Ph. pubescens [▽]. Ph. pubescens is close to Phytoecia (Phytoecia) icterica (Schaller, 1783) from which it differs mainly by the totally black hind and middle legs.
