Mesosa myops, described from Finland as Lamia myops by Johan Wilhelm Dalman in 1817 [▽], is a species with large area of occurence from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean coasts, from the Southern Urals, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Amur region in the south to the middle belt of the taiga zone in the North. M. myops inhabits deciduous and mixed forest zones and is ecologically associated with plethora of deciduous tree species (e.g. Quercus, Tilia, Ulmus, Salix, Acer, Prunus, Betula). Larvae feed under bark of dead, rotten branches and stems attacking both fallen and standing trees. Adults active from May to September, the peak of emergence is dependent on the region of occurence. Many adults emerge in late summer, then overwintering hidden in forest litter, and eventually activate again during the first warm weeks of the following spring [❖].
Body length: 10 - 15 mm Life cycle: 2 years Adults in: May - September (depending on region) Host plant: broadly polyphagous in deciduous trees (Quercus, Tilia, Ulmus, Salix, Acer, Prunus, Betula etc.) Distribution: Belarus, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, China, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Korea, Taiwan
The depicted mounted beetles were collected in confluence of Kamenystyi (Каменистый) creek and Listvennichnaya (Лиственничная) river (N43°34′48″ E131°21′22″; Borisovskoye Plateau, South of Primorsky krai, Far Eastern Federal District, Russia) on May 30, 2019. The living specimen was reared from larva found in a dead willow (Salix sp.) branch in Altaı (formerly Zyryanovsk or Зырян/Zyrıan) environs (Altaı district, East Kazakhstan region, Kazakhstan) in June 2019.Collected by K. Makarov and Jiří Kadlec
