Hesperophanes sericeus, a widely distributed Mediterranean nocturnal species frequently attracted to light, has been described from Algeria as Callidium sericeum by Johann Christian Fabricius in 1787 [✧]. Larvae are developing in dead wood of thick trunks or roots and pupate in the wood, species is polyphagous in many species of deciduos trees.

Adults in:June - September
Host plant:polyphagous on deciduous trees and shrubs (Juglans, Ficus, Vitis, Platanus, Quercus, etc.)
Distribution:whole Mediterranean region (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Albania, Corsica, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Sardinia, Sicily, Spain, Cyprus, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Turkey) and Crimea


The depicted mounted beetles were collected in: ♂ Zakynthos island (Ionian Islands, Greece) on August 20, 2004; ♀ Primošten environs (Šibenik-Knin county, Croatia) on July 28, 2012. The living specimen was collected in Lebanon in 2017.
