Grammoptera geniculata, so far known only from the south of the Iberian Peninsula (Andalusia), was originally described by Gustav Kraatz from Andalusia as a variety (var. geniculata of the common European species Grammoptera (Grammoptera) ustulata (Schaller, 1783). G. ustulata var. geniculata was distinguished by G. Kraatz from nominotypic taxon by dark red to black legs (including femora) and dark antennae. This taxon was listed as a valid species in the catalogue of Palaearctic Cerambycoidea by Danilevsky [✮], but the distinguishing characters of the species were missing.

Based on the morphological differences, the status of Grammoptera geniculata Kraatz, 1886 was reinstated to the species level by Lukáš Skořepa in 2024 [✳]. The additional morphological features of this interesting taxon are provided in his paper. Considering the circumstances of the discovery of the series of specimens by the author of the publication, it can be assumed that the biology of the species is similar to other European species of the genus Grammoptera.
