Evodinellus borealis, a widely distributed boreo-alpine relict occuring from Atlantic to Pacific ocean coast (extremely rare in Central Europe), has been described from Finland as Leptura borealis
by Leonard Gyllenhal in 1827 [✧]. E. boreralis is a highly variable species in terms of elytra coloration - from typical beetles with dark elytra with light spots to predominantly light specimens.
Larvae develop under the bark of branches (2 - 8 cm in diameter) of seriously weakened, freshly fallen or felled conifers. After the first ovewintering the adult larvae fall from the branches to the soil in the second half of summer,
but some remain in the wood for the second overwintering and leave branches during the next spring. Mass pupation occurs in the soil at the end of summer, pupae overwinter and adults hatch in pupal cells in April.
Adults, active from May to August (peak in June), are diurnal and anthophilous (Spiraea, Apiaceae, etc.) [✩][❖].
