Agapanthia irrorata, a relatively common and widely distributed species in South-West Mediterranean region, has been described from Algeria as Saperda irrorata by Johann Christian Fabricius in 1787 [❖]. The species was included in the newly established monotypic subgenus Drosotrichia by Carlo Pesarini and Andrea Sabbadini in 2004 [✧]. A. irrorata is a very variable species in appearance, the basic color is metallic black or blue-black with a number of yellow or white pubescent elytral spots, but some specimens have a very reduced number of spots or spots are completely missing. Larvae of A. irrorata develop in stems of many species of living herbaceous plants (Onopordon, Carduus, Salvia, Daucus, Thapsia, Ferula etc.) [✮][✳]. Adults, active from April to June, are diurnal and can be collected on the host plants.
Body length: 13 - 23 mm Life cycle: 1 year Adults in: April - June Host plant: polyphagous in herbaceous plants (Onopordon, Carduus, Salvia, Daucus, Thapsia, Ferula etc.) Distribution: Algeria, Corsica (France), Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Sardinia, Sicily, Spain, Tunisia
